Background removal

Background removal helps when the surroundings are distracting. It is most useful for photos taken at events, in homes, outdoors, or on busy surfaces.

When to enable it

Use background removal for portraits, pets, vehicles, and products when the background creates extra lines you do not want engraved.

When to turn it off

Turn it off if the background is part of the artwork, if the source photo is already clean, or if the subject has very fine transparent edges.

How to improve separation

Choose photos where the subject has visible contrast from the surroundings and is not touching similar-looking background objects.

Photo tips

  • Use a plain wall or table where possible.
  • Avoid objects touching the head, fur, wheels, handles, or product outline.
  • Keep enough light around the edges of the subject.
  • Crop loosely around the subject before uploading if the frame is very wide.

Common mistakes

  • Using a dark subject against a dark background.
  • Leaving a busy kitchen, tree, or chair directly behind the subject.
  • Cropping so tightly that the subject touches the image edge.
  • Turning background removal on when the full scene is needed.

FAQs

Should background removal always be on?

No. It is helpful for busy photos, but unnecessary when the background is already clean or part of the desired engraving.

Can background removal make mistakes?

Yes. Objects touching the subject or sharing similar colours can be difficult. A cleaner photo usually improves the result.

Will changing filters repeat background preparation?

No. You can change settings and regenerate without uploading the same photo again.
